Teigan's Story

Back to Family Stories

Teigan’s mom Stephanie had just taken a teaching job about 45 miles outside of Great Falls where the family was living in a school-owned house. His dad Josh had been commuting daily to Great Falls. Upon learning Teigan had leukemia, they moved their family to Great Falls, closer to medical treatment.

Teigan was a very healthy four-year-old, so when he began running a fever his parents took him to the doctor. Although initial blood tests suggested a rare virus that would improve within a couple months, further tests revealed shocking news. Teigan had cancer. The doctor said he needed to go to Children’s Hospital in Seattle right away.
“We didn’t have a clue as to what we were facing or how long we would be in Seattle,” said Stephanie, Teigan’s mom. “We were too concerned about Teigan to really think about where we would stay.”
A hospital social worker told the family about the Ronald McDonald House. When they left Montana on their 700-mile journey to Seattle, the House was full. But by the time they arrived, they were relieved to learn that a room was available. Tiegan’s dad, Josh, spent a week getting them settled, then returned to his job in Montana and caring for Teigan’s brother and sister. Stephanie remained in Seattle with Teigan for what would be four months before returning again for a two-month follow-up.
“You can’t explain what life is like here at the House. Living here changed my attitude. It was an eye-opener going from having three healthy children to discovering my youngest had cancer. I used to hear or read about people with children who had cancer, but you really don’t understand what it’s like. You feel bad, but you can go about your daily life. You’re not consumed by it,” said Stephanie. “At the House, you see others who are grieving and you form a bond.”
“The volunteers understand…they are so wonderful. When Teigan is really sick, it is hard to fix him something to eat, so I really appreciate the volunteers who fix dinners. I can’t say enough good things about the House.”
